What’s more important, physical health or mental health?

Life is something we all get, but something we don't get is a ‘perfect life’. The perfect life where your body is something you love, where you are actually ‘happy’, and where your choices are not judged. Therefore, we all know nothing in this world is ‘perfect’, everyone has flaws, imperfections, and regrets. However, the real question is should you focus on how you look or how you feel?

First of all, let's commence by understanding what these two are.

Physical health is getting yourself to be fit and keep in shape. You can have a designated workout that you almost never miss. Your health comes before anything else. For example: if someone brought donuts to your workplace and they offered you one, chances are you will refuse the offer because of your diet. Physical health can be good. It is looking out for yourself and keeping yourself healthy but it also can turn into an unhealthy obsession at times.

An unhealthy obsession with your body may not seem like a big deal, but in the long run, it’s not a good thing.

Mental health on the other hand has nothing to do with how you look. Mental health is all about how you feel not how you look. When you focus on mental health you are looking at the beauty on the inside rather than the outside. Mental health is about our emotional, psychological, and social well-being. It determines how we perceive, act, and respond to stress. It also helps decide how we cope with tension, interacts with others, and make decisions.

So what should you be focusing on?

When you want a balanced life you should honestly be focusing on both. Mental and physical well-being are similarly essential aspects of good health. Mental disorder, especially depression, raises the risk for multiple forms of physical health complications, including long-lasting disorders like stroke, type 2 diabetes, and heart disease. As a human in this very interesting world, I personally think that mental health should come first and then physical health. However, you should also be aware of what goes into your body and some bodies are different and THAT IS OK. Accepting yourself is something you should do too. As long you are healthy don't try to CHANGE.
